Conditions of entry
The Crawley Gap Year Scholarship is open to any Harrovian in his last year (but not to members of the Crawley family). The conditions are straightforward and hardly onerous: during his gap year each applicant must be ready to travel and to learn a foreign language.
The application process
A procedure letter is sent out to all boys in the Upper Sixth before the Spring half term. The letter tells the boys what they need to do to apply. Applications must be in the form of a written presentation and the successful projects will provide:
- a detailed and imaginative travel plan
- evidence of your serious commitment to learn (or improve) a foreign language
- thoughts on how you will embrace a new culture
- careful costing of the above.
The Head Master then makes up a shortlist of approximately 10 entries. House Masters supply a reference for each candidate. On an appointed day the judges come to Harrow, having read the written applications and the House Masters' reports, to interview the candidates personally. Each interview lasts 15 minutes.
