The Halford Hewitt is the annual April gathering of sixty-four Old Boys' golf teams for a scratch foursomes knock-out competition at the Royal St George’s and Royal Cinque Ports Golf Clubs. With six hundred and forty competitors in teams of ten, it is the largest amateur golf competition in the world. Driven by the inspiring leadership of Philip Hill (The Knoll 1986³), and a Men of Harlech team spirit, Harrow prevailed over strong opposition from Sherborne, St Paul’s, Merchiston, and recent winners Epsom. Regrettably the quality of play achieved against Epsom somehow eluded us in the Semi-final itself against Malvern, also recent winners. Malvern then lost in the Final to Tonbridge, a remarkably high-class outfit boasting several “plus” handicaps amongst an array of ex-professionals and full-time amateurs. James Keen (The Park 19903) has been compared to fellow Old Harrovian James Blunt (Elmfield 19873) and certainly it can't be easy being an Old Harrovian singer/songwriter and following in those particular footsteps. James's new album, No Coincidence, was released in November 2007 on his own label Jackaroo, and has received some good reviews in online media and some airplay on Radio 2. James very kindly adjudicated the School's Mortimer Singer Prize Competition in April, and is combining his fledgling music career with his job as a headhunter in the property world.
